Sie fragt nach der gesellschaftspolitischen Dimension des Wohnens und der Rolle des Designs zwischen Utopie, Macht- und Genderdiskursen.25 internationale Expert:innen stellen in ihren Textbeiträgen unterschiedliche Designs und Interieurs von der Küche bis zum Weltraum und zurück vor. Das Buch liefert auf diese Weise einen signifikanten Beitrag zum aktuellen Diskurs um (post-)sozialistisches Design, der gerade auch auf internationaler Ebene immer stärker in den fachlichen Fokus rückt. Erstmals arbeiten Autor:innen aus den verschiedenen (post-)sozialistischen Herkunftsländern gemeinsam an einer Publikation, um damit auch eine empfindliche Leerstelle in der Designgeschichte zu schließen, Retrotopia. Design for Socialist Spaces is a comprehensive cooperation project focusing on the role and impact of design in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc. By creating a new network of institutions and curators it provides insights into the complex layers of this particular design landscape from the 1960s till the 1980s which has been unfamiliar to wider audiences until today. During the Cold War, design and architecture mutated into a mirror of the geopolitical showdown between the two superpowers. Yet beyond political appropriation, there was a sameness in the difference. Designers and architects in both systems were confronted with the same social challenges, worked on similar design questions and sustainable solutions for the environment, developed comparable ideas and designed visionary projects that often failed to progress beyond the stage of experiment or prototype. The authors of Retrotopia seek to drill down into these unknown areas and in so doing break through a wide range of 'spaces' that overlap with one another, form networks and spread outward like rhizomes. Their research and insights render a decisive contribution to the writing of a new global history of dsign, a long-overdue desideratum. | |
