505 1 |a "This catalogue accompanies a major exhibition at the Neue Galerie new York devoted to offering a fascinating new look at the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and his influence on his Austrian and German contemporaries. Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was highly regarded for his exploration of dark themes, including alienation, sin, and human vulnerability. His work incorporates the vivid colors of previous styles, but Munch intensified their emotional power and paved the way for an entirely new approach to painting. Although much has been written about Munch's life and its influence on his art, this catalogue is the first thorough study of the artist's impact on his German and Austrian peers, and places his oeuvre in an Expressionist context. Essays by leading scholars in the field examine the close connection between Munch and his Austrian and German counterparts, with special attention focused upon the work of Max Beckmann. Munch's self-portraits are also closely examined, as is his seminal role in working with the woodcut in a highly innovative fashion, and his influence upon the work of Erich Heckel and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in particular"--
